 The international customers appreciate the high degree of<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 innovation of EREMA as a technology leader. At least as <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
important for recyclers, however, is the robustness of their systems.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 These should ultimately run for many years without malfunctions under<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 the rough conditions typical for the industry and reliably ensure the <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
best results. For EREMA, as a provider of the corresponding solutions,<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 this means, as formulated by Markus: \u201cOur target group attaches <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
great importance to the durability of their systems. It thus doesn\u2019t<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 always have to be the latest technology, but it must function well and<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
sustainably.\u201d Given the very long service life for which the machines<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 and systems of EREMA are designed, the software engineer thereby<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 always has an eye on the future: what we build today still needs to<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 meet all requirements in 15 or 20 years.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

 Against this background, EREMA converted the control system<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 technology for all systems around three years ago from Profibus to<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 future capable Industrial Ethernet; more precisely, to PROFINET,<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 because around 95 percent of the control systems used are Siemens <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
products. However, as justified as this decision was, it initially meant <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
entirely concrete challenges for Markus and his colleagues:<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 \u201cWe were particularly challenged by the question of how we can<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 cleanly position machine networks on a PROFINET basis,\u201d he looks back. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 The use of PROFINET switches had already been decided upon<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
at this stage of the decision making process, because they are <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
principally best suited as network components for the specific <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
requirements of PROFINET. That means: with a transmission<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 speed of 100 Mbps, they, for example, regenerate signals,<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 receive them, and forward them in a targeted fashion.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 However, the question of the optimal model was initially open.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

Decision for Helmholz<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 The answer should provide a comprehensive provider analysis in the<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 sector of PROFINET components. The technical decision makers didn\u2019t<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 make it easy for themselves in the process: \u201cThis is of course a very large<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 market, and we really looked at a great many manufacturers,\u201d according to<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 the automation experts.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

Among the analyzed companies was also Helmholz from Erlangen, which is<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 represented in Austria by Buxbaum Automation GmbH in Eisenstadt.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 The German manufacturer was not unknown to EREMA: they had<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 already acquired memory cards from Helmholz for a longer period of time.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 These were especially developed for use in the control system series<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 SIMATIC S7- 1200\/1500 from Siemens and have proven themselves<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 at EREMA as high performance alternatives. Nonetheless, Helmholz had to<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 prove itself onceagain as a provider of PROFINET switches in the context<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 of the market analysis \u2013 and ultimately convinced with a whole <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
series of arguments.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

 Markus names the following as the \u201cmain reason\u201d: \u201cHelmholz<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 switches work.\u201d And this is not at all self-explanatory in the<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 competitive environment, as the many practical tests in the<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 course of the market analysis showed. The compact design<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 and the user-friendliness were additional arguments in favor<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 of Helmholz products: \u201cThey can be installed in a way that<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 saves space, they are easy to integrate, and they can be easily<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 configured,\u201c the professional states. And not least, in the face of<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 around 300 new machines annually, the good price-performance<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 ratio is also an important criterion. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

In concrete terms, managed PROFINET switches from Helmholz<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 are used as a standard in the 8-port variant (for the connection<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 with eight network participants) and with 16 ports for larger machines.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 \u201cThey primarily take over the logical setup of our machine networks,\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 is how Markus describes the main task of the intelligent components.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 \u201cLogical\u201d in this connection means: the network can be set up in the<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 same way as the individual functions using the switches. This<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 guarantees not only optimized data distribution and stable<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 network operation, but also provides advantages with regard to the<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 wiring, which can be represented as follows from a practical perspective:<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 \u201cThanks to the logical setup of the network, I don’t need to guide<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 the cable through through the whole machine. That saves time and<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 money for the installation and at the same time increases the reliability<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 of the later operation of the machine.\u201d \u201cThey primarily take over the<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 logical setup of our machine networks,\u201d is how Markus describes<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 the main task of the intelligent components. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

 Practical experiences and a look into the future <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n

 The PROFINET switches from Helmholz in fact also prove to be<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 \u201cvery robust and reliable\u201d in practical operation, as Markus from EREMA<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 reports: \u201cThe experiences of our customers are very positive. In the<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 event of the failure of a switch, the machine would come to an immediate<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 standstill, and the customer would contact us very quickly. This in fact<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 happens only extremely rarely.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

 At the same time, EREMA already has an eye on the next development step.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 In this way, the company is currently attempting, for example, supported <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
by Helmholz and the Austrian sales partner Buxbaum Automation, the <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
safe and efficient integration of a machine into a higher level production<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 network via the Industrial Ethernet Bridge and Firewall WALL IE.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 This is because one thing is certain, according to software engineer<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
 Markus: \u201cNetwork technology will become even more important in future.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
