However, if temperature hotspots <strong>occur<\/strong>, these individually contribute significantly to aging and thus to the failure of the transformer. Such hotspots can no longer be seen from the outside after a transformer has been manufactured. The fibers can have a length of up to <strong>250m<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The measuring principle of the multi-point temperature measurements on transformers works as follows: A short <strong>pulse<\/strong> of <strong>light<\/strong> is radiated into the <strong>optical fiber<\/strong> with a laser. As a result, the <strong>photons<\/strong> of this <strong>light<\/strong> <strong>impulse<\/strong> scatter on the <strong>molecules<\/strong> of the <strong>glass fiber<\/strong>. When the temperature <strong>increases<\/strong>, the wavelength of the <strong>backscattered<\/strong> <strong>photon<\/strong> shifts. This shift in <strong>wavelength<\/strong> is <strong>proportional<\/strong> to the temperature <strong>difference<\/strong> encountered, <strong>enabling<\/strong> reliable <strong>multi-point<\/strong> temperature measurements on transformers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">With an <strong>additional<\/strong> measurement of the time that the <strong>photons<\/strong> need until they are measured at the <strong>detector<\/strong>, the position of the temperature <strong>increase<\/strong> can be precisely determined.
